Why Our Tug of War Ropes are Right for Your P.E. and Camp Programs
Physical education teachers and camp directors know that tug of war is the ultimate test of cooperative teamwork and physical endurance. However, using the wrong rope can ruin the event. Cheap hardware-store ropes easily snap under the extreme tension of dozens of athletes, and improper materials can cause severe rope burns or splinters that send students to the nurse's office. Our 2026 collection focuses strictly on institutional-grade manufacturing. We prioritize heavy-duty tensile strengths, thick 1-inch to 1.5-inch diameters for ergonomic gripping, and specialized materials like Unmanila and advanced looped pull lines that protect athletes' hands while delivering uncompromising durability.
Top-Tier Pull Lines for Every Level of Competition
We stock specifically chosen ropes to ensure your field day, camp, or athletic event operates smoothly and safely for any group size.
- Classic Natural Manila & Synthetic Unmanila: The staple of any field day. Our traditional Manila ropes offer the classic, coarse grip that generations have loved. For a safer, softer alternative, our "Unmanila" and Polyester ropes mimic the look and feel of natural fiber but are manufactured from synthetic blends that are virtually splinter-free and highly resistant to moisture and rot.
- Powerpull® Pro Series with Loops: Ready to take your pulls to the next level? The Powerpull® Olympic Pro Series completely revolutionizes the game. Instead of an abrasive primitive rope, these systems feature ultra-lite, flexible pull lines equipped with 10,000-lb tested pull loops. This allows players to lock in their grip without wasting energy just holding on, allowing 100% of their physical effort to go into pulling strategy and body alignment.
- 4-Way Tug of War Ropes: Want to maximize participation and chaotic fun? Our 4-Way Tug of War ropes allow four independent teams to pull simultaneously in a massive test of multi-directional strength. They are perfect for massive summer camp groups or multi-class field day competitions.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between Manila and "Unmanila" rope?
Manila is a traditional, natural hemp-like fiber. It is heavy, durable, and provides excellent grip, but it can shed and occasionally cause splinters if not handled carefully. "Unmanila" (often made from specially spun polypropylene) mimics the look of natural Manila but is completely synthetic. It is much softer on the hands, splinter-free, and won't rot or shrink if it gets wet on a damp athletic field.
2. What length of rope do I need for my group?
As a general rule of thumb, you should allocate roughly 5 feet of rope per participant to ensure they have enough room to stagger their footing without bumping into the person behind them. For example:
- 25-Foot Rope: Great for small groups (roughly 2 to 3 players per side).
- 50-Foot Rope: Ideal for mid-sized classes (roughly 8 to 10 players per side).
- 75-Foot to 100-Foot Ropes: Best for massive field day events and large camp groups.
3. What diameter rope is best for tug of war?
A 1-inch diameter is generally the standard for youth, middle school, and general physical education use, as it fits comfortably in smaller hands. For high school athletes, adults, and heavy-duty competition, a thicker 1.5-inch diameter is recommended to prevent hand cramping under extreme tension.
4. What is the Powerpull® loop system?
The Powerpull® system replaces the traditional thick rope with a high-tensile, lightweight line that features individually spaced pulling loops. Players put their hands inside these loops, which provides a secure, non-slip grip. It significantly reduces hand fatigue, prevents rope burn, and allows the pullers to focus entirely on their leg drive and body positioning.
5. How do I prevent the ends of the rope from fraying?
Our institutional ropes come with specially finished ends—often woven, whipped, or covered with heavy-duty heat-shrink tubing (booted ends). To ensure the rope lasts for years, never drag the finished ends aggressively across asphalt, and store the rope coiled in a dry equipment closet when not in use.
6. Do you accept school purchase orders for field day equipment?
Absolutely. Morley Athletic has worked directly with schools and universities for over nine decades. We happily accept school purchase orders. Athletic directors and physical education departments can easily submit a formal PO to purchase multiple tug of war ropes, 4-way systems, and other field day supplies for their entire school district.
