It MAKES you keep it low and under control. The top of the device makes you keep it under it and if you don't keep it low enough you will hit the ball or hand on the top and lose control
It MAKES you keep your eyes up and down the court to see the basket, teammates and the whole floor. When you try and look down at the ball, it doesn't matter you cant see it! Helps teach the player to have a feel for the ball and anticipate where the next dribble will go.
