Selecting the Right Hammer for Your Throwing Program
The hammer throw is a game of centrifugal force, surgical precision, and extreme durability. For athletic directors and coaches, outfitting a throwing squad requires a mix of implements that can withstand thousands of high-velocity impacts while maintaining their balance and weight specifications. Our 2026 collection focuses on institutional-grade hammers that deliver a true feel and consistent flight. Whether you are looking for high-end stainless steel models that minimize air resistance or rugged cast iron workhorses for training, we provide the tools that help your athletes master their technique safely.
Top-Tier Implements for Every Environment
We stock a variety of hammer styles and accessories to ensure your throwers are prepared for both the outdoor season and winter indoor training.
- Competition Steel & Brass Hammers: For your top-tier athletes, we offer precision-turned steel and brass competition hammers. These implements are balanced to the millimeter, ensuring the center of gravity is exactly where it needs to be for maximum distance. They are engineered to meet or exceed all NFHS, NCAA, and World Athletics specifications.
- Cast Iron Practice Hammers: Ideal for high-volume repetitions. Cast iron hammers are the industry standard for daily training due to their extreme durability and cost-effectiveness. They provide the same regulation weight and feel as competition models but are built to take the abuse of landing on various field surfaces.
- Indoor Soft-Shell Hammers: Don't let the snow stop your training. We carry specialized indoor hammers made from high-density poly or rubber shells. These allow athletes to perform full-speed throws into nets or against gym walls without damaging the facility or the implement, making them essential for winter conditioning.
- Essential Accessories: A hammer is only as good as its connection to the thrower. We supply heavy-duty replacement wires in various lengths, high-grip aluminum handles, and leather throwing gloves to ensure your athletes have a secure, legal, and comfortable grip through every rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the official weights for hammer competition?
The official weights vary by division to ensure safe and fair competition:
- 4.0 kg (8.82 lbs): Official weight for High School Girls, Women's Collegiate, and International Women.
- 12.0 lbs (5.44 kg): Official weight for High School Boys (NFHS).
- 16.0 lbs (7.26 kg): Official weight for Men's Collegiate (NCAA) and International Men.
2. What is the difference between a turned steel hammer and a cast iron hammer?
Turned Steel hammers are machined on a lathe to ensure a perfectly spherical shape and a centralized center of gravity, which provides a more consistent flight—ideal for competition. Cast Iron hammers are molded, making them slightly less "perfect" but much more affordable and durable for the hundreds of throws required during daily practice sessions.
3. Do the hammers come with the wire and handle?
Most of our hammers are sold as complete units, including the implement, a high-strength steel wire, and a regulation handle. However, because wires can wear out over time, we also sell replacement wires and handles individually so you can maintain your equipment without replacing the entire hammer.
4. How do I choose the correct wire length?
The total length of the hammer (from the inside of the handle to the bottom of the ball) is strictly regulated by the NFHS and NCAA (usually not exceeding 4 feet or 121.5cm). When buying replacement wires, ensure you select the length that, when combined with your specific handle and ball diameter, stays within these legal limits.
5. Can I use outdoor hammers inside if I have a net?
We strongly advise against using cast iron or steel hammers indoors, even with a throwing net. The impact can easily damage gymnasium floors if the ball misses the net or pierces it. Specialized Indoor Soft-Shell Hammers are designed specifically for this purpose and are much safer for the facility.
6. Do you accept school purchase orders for track and field equipment?
Absolutely. Morley Athletic has worked directly with schools and universities for nearly a century. We happily accept school purchase orders. Athletic directors and track coaches can easily submit a formal PO to purchase hammers, shot puts, discus cages, and landing systems for their entire program.
