The "18" base rule refers to the increase in size of first, second, and third base in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 15 inches square to 18 inches square. This change, implemented in 2023, aims to improve player safety and potentially increase baserunning aggression.

The primary goal of the larger bases is to provide more space for players around the bases, reducing the risk of collisions and injuries. Specifically, it aims to give players more room to avoid collisions when a runner is running to first base.
The increased base size also encourages more aggressive baserunning, potentially leading to more stolen bases and runners being more active on the base paths.
While the rule is Major and Minor League only right now it sounds like it is going to works its way into all levels of play. While we can not be sure of this it is a good idea to

be prepared.
If you are setting up a new field we recommend purchasing the CH Anchors starter set with double base anchors for 1st and 3rd base. If you install these now it will save you the headache of having to go back and install them later in order to use the 18" bases.
You will only need the double anchors for 1st and 3rd base as the 2nd base anchor will work for either size base.
Check out this video quick to see how simple the CH Anchor system is- if you're not using one already you should be to cut your field maintenance down. You can get starter sets with standard or double anchors at www.morleyathletyic.com.
